Tanjung Aan Beach is a gem in Indonesia that is still untouched by mass tourism. Located in the southern part of Lombok, this stunning beach has powdery white sand, clear turquoise water, and a peaceful atmosphere that is perfect for relaxation. Here is a complete guide to Tanjung Aan Beach that will help you plan your trip to this paradise.
If you went to Bali before Lombok like I did you will be pleasantly surprised by the white sand beaches instead of the black sand that Bali has. The beach in Lombok is straight out of a movie with the long arced coastline and cute pink cafes that serve little coconuts.Â
What is Tanjung Aan Beach?
Tanjung Aan Beach is a beach on the south side of Lombok. It is a long stretch of soft white sand that is surrounded by hills and cliffs. There are two coves on the beach separated by a tall hill jutting out into the ocean. The west cove is more famous and has a couple of really cute cafes. This side is also really good for surfing in the afternoon when the waves and wind pick up.Â
The beach is not crowded at all like Kuta beach in the town of Kuta in Lombok. The beach is still undiscovered by the masses and the locals keep it very clean. Most of the people that I know that went there have described it as their favorite beach in Lombok. I fell in love with the beach when I saw it in someone’s story. There were a few people surfing on the beach and it just looked so calm and peaceful. Bali has become very over touristed but Lombok is still a very amazing quiet place to go and chill.
Ferry From Bali to Lombok
To get to the beach, you need to first take a boat from Bali to Lombok. There are two ports in Lombok you can go to depending on where you are staying.
- Bangsal – This port is the one right next to Gili islands. It is up towards the north of the island. Most of the ferries go from Bali to this port.
- Senggigi – This is another port closer to the city of Nusa Tenggara. It is further south on the west coast of Lombok. There are a few ferries that run from Bali to here every week.
There are four ports in Bali. All four ports have ferries that run to Bangsal. Only ferries from Serangan, Padang Bai and Sanur go to Senggigi.
- Amed
- Sanur
- Padang Bai
- Serangan
The fast ferry takes around 1.5 to 3 hours. The slow boat takes 4 to 8 hours. You can only take your car and scooter across on the slow boat. If you book online there are tour companies that pick you up from your hotel in Bali and drop you off at the ferry for the included price.
Lombok Port to Kuta Town
Once on the island, you can either rent a motorbike or car or hire a driver. There are shops lined up outside the harbor for scooter rentals. I have not rented a car on the island so I am not sure how to do that but you can just ask the people at the rental shops. The cost to rent a scooter is the same as in the mainland in 2023 which is IDR 70,000 per day. It takes about two hours to drive from the Bangsal Harbor (Teluk Kodek Port) to reach the town of Kuta.
Driving a scooter in Lombok is the same as driving it in Bali. Maybe even better because the traffic and people are not as crazy. There are less tourists which makes the roads much safer. The locals are very good drivers and won’t cause any accidents.
The roads in Lombok in 2023 are very good and you can go anywhere on your own. I always prefer to have my own scooter because I like the freedom to be able to go anywhere at a moment’s notice.
Kuta to Tanjung Aan Beach
From Kuta, the way to Tanjung Aan Beach takes around 20 minutes. It is a scenic drive through lush greenery and rice fields.
To get to the beach take Jl. Sengkol that leaves Kuta on the east. The road goes straight for a few miles before you come to a big roundabout. Take the 3rd exit from the roundabout. Take the first left after this. This road will take you straight to the beach.
There are multiple small parking lots next to the warungs. You can park at any one of these. They all charge the same amount.
Directions to Tanjung Aan Beach from Kuta
From Kuta, take Jalan Raya Kuta Selong to Jalan Pariwisata, continue onto the Jalan Raya Tanjung, and follow the road until you reach Tanjung Aan Beach.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Tanjung Aan Beach is during the dry season, which is from May to September. The weather is pleasant and dry, and the water is clear and perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
Entry Fees and Timings
The beach is open 24/7 but the warungs with the day beds and surfboards open and close at their whim. They are usually open from 10am to sunset but it depends on the owner at all times. The entry fee is IDR 10,000. The locals will ask for this when you park the scooter and give you a receipt. I have heard that they use the money to keep the beach clean.
What to Expect at Tanjung Aan Beach
Tanjung Aan Beach offers something for everyone, whether you want to relax on the beach, swim, surf, or explore the surroundings.
West Cove with Warung Turtle and Warung Surfer Beach
The west cove is perfect for surfing and has two beachside warungs that serve fresh seafood and local delicacies.
Warung Turtle is a cute cafe with a pink hut that sells local food like Mie Goreng and fresh coconuts. What better than to have a little coconut and hot noodles after a surf session? They have some day beds that are free to use if you buy something from the warung as well.
Warung Surfer Beach is another cute warung here. They caught my eye because they had a couple of really pretty colored longboards. The surfboards did look a little dented but I doubt you can find better ones than that at the beach. You can rent teh surfboards by the hour.
They also give you free day beds to chill on if you buy something to eat or drink from the beach. They have some international cuisine options too. The dish I had (whose name I forgot) was very yummy.
Bukit Antara
Bukit Antara is a hill located between the two coves of Tanjung Aan Beach that has a stunning view of the beach. You can see both sides of the beach from the top of this hill. If you have a drone this is the perfect spot to fly it from.
East Cove for Swimming
The east cove of the beach is not developed at all and has a much more local vibe. You will only find fishermen here and their boats docked in the water. There are a couple local warungs that serve the fishermen I believe.
I did not see anyone going to this side but I did walk to the end of the beach to check it out. The beach break is much calmer here and there is no seaweed because the water looks clear and blue on this side. I would recommend swimming here than at the west cove.
Surfing at Tanjung Aan Beach
Tanjung Aan Beach is a popular spot for surfing, especially during the wet season when the waves are high and consistent. There are several surfboard rental shops and surf schools around the beach.
I went surfing here and it was so much better than Canggu in Bali. The waves are calmer and form much better. Plus the reef isn’t right under you so there is no danger or getting cut. I loved it so much more than the rough beach breaks in Canggu!
