Canggu is a popular coastal destination in Bali, known for its stunning beaches that attract surfers, sunbathers, and nature lovers alike. There are five beaches in Canggu also of which have their own personality. Since they are all close together, I like walking from one beach to another often times since it’s a quiet and peaceful walk.

Batu Bolong Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Canggu. It has great waves for surfers and a lively atmosphere with plenty of beach bars and restaurants. Echo Beach, a few hundreds meter up, has stunning sunsets and also offers good surfing conditions, although the currents can be strong.

Berawa Beach on the other hand is quieter and less crowded than some of the other beaches in Canggu, making it a great spot for swimming and sunbathing. Nelayan Beach is known for its picturesque fishing boats and almost never has any beaches near it.

Finally, Pererenan Beach is the perfect spot if you want a quiet and secluded beach. It’s a bit up north from Canggu and not a lot of tourists go here. The beach is also surrounded by rice fields which add to the beach’s natural beauty.

How Many Beaches Does Canggu Have?

Batu Bolong Beach has great waves for surfers and plenty of beach bars and restaurants right next to it.

Echo Beach is a popular spot for watching the sunset and also offers good surfing conditions, although the currents can be strong.

Berawa Beach is a quieter option with a more relaxed vibe, making it a great spot for swimming and sunbathing.

Nelayan Beach is known for its picturesque fishing boats and offers a more local feel compared to some of the other beaches in the area.

Pererenan Beach is a peaceful and secluded spot with black sand and stunning views, perfect for a relaxing day by the ocean.

Batu Bolong Beach

This beach in Canggu is surrounded by black volcanic sand and is lined with palm trees, making it a beautiful place to relax and soak up the sun. It is the biggest and most popular beach in Canggu. You will find it full of people and surfers every day from morning till the night time. The famous Old Man’s bar is right next to the beach here.

Swimming at Batu Bolong

This Canggu beach is not a good place to swim unless you are used to an ocean like this. It has dumping waves near the entrance to the parking lot with reef below and you can get seriously injured. If you want to swim, walk a little ways down towards Nelayan beach where the river flows into the ocean. This is the break in the waves and where the waves tend to be the most calm.

Surfing at Batu Bolong

Batu Bolong is known for being the best beach in Canggu for beginner surfers. Since the waves are mellow, I prefer using my 8ft hard board for smaller waves and 7ft hard board for when the waves reach 6-8ft. You can rent a board from the vendors on the beach for 50k IDR for one hour and 300k for surf lessons for 2 hours. They are really aggressive and friendly but are very respectful so if you say no firmly they will listen to you.

Restaurants at Batu Bolong

Old Man’s is the most famous bar on this beach where locals and tourists congregate every afternoon and evening. Some other good restaurants close by are Local Cheatery and The Common Cafe. The Lawn is a beach club and an influencer hotspot for brunch and beach days, though I prefer renting a chair from the locals on the beach.

Shopping at Batu Bolong

Some popular shopping spots near Batu Bolong Beach include the Love Anchor Canggu market, which features a range of vendors selling handmade goods and locally produced items. My favorite boutique shop near Batu Bolong Beach is Cute Mistake which have a great selection of clothing and swimwear for women.

Hotels near Batu Bolong

Top villas near Batu Bolong Beach are La Luna Belle and ASTON Canggu Beach Resort.

Echo Beach

One of the beaches in Canggu preferred by tourists is Echo Beach. This is a smaller beach in Canggu is just 100 meters from Batu Bolong Beach but much less crowded with only a few vendors. I much prefer it on the days when I want some peace and quiet.

Swimming at Echo Beach

The waves at Echo Beach have a nasty shore break so you can get tossed pretty bad if you don’t know how to duck under them. The good part is that there is only sand below and not reef so you wont get injured too bad near the shore.

Surfing at Echo Beach

Echo Beach has a smaller crowd than Batu Bolong because the waves are slightly more advanced. It’s known for its consistent waves and is a popular destination for surfers of all levels. The beach is also home to several surf schools and rental shops, making it easy for visitors to try their hand at surfing. You can rent a board from the vendors on the beach for 50k IDR for one hour and 300k for surf lessons for 2 hours.

Restaurants at Echo Beach

La Brisa and COMO Beach Club are both near here. La Brisa is one of the best spots for brunch and you will find the entire influencer population of Canggu here on weekends.

Shopping at Echo Beach

La Brisa has a Sunday market from 10am to 4pm which I found really exciting. They have a bunch of local and boutique vendors with some interesting stuff. You can also find snack and foods or head over to their restaurant after shopping. Right next to La Brisa is a local market where you will find lots of local vendors and every Balinese souvenir you could want.

Hotels near Echo Beach

COMO Uma Bali has private villas and suites as well as a beach club attached to it which is great because you don’t have to haggle with locals to rent sun beds. They have a great cuisine and are located right next to one of the most famous surf breaks of Bali.

Berawa Beach

Berawa Beach in Canggu is known for its consistent waves and sandy beach, making it a great spot for both surfing and relaxing. The beach is also home to several beach clubs and restaurants, offering a range of dining and entertainment options for visitors.

Swimming at Berawa Beach

The beach is the same as other beaches with dumpy shore waves that can hurt a lot if you get caught on a bigger day. Smaller days are ok for swimming here.

Surfing at Berawa Beach

The beach offers a range of surf breaks suitable for surfers of all levels, from beginner to advanced. Additionally, the beach is home to several surf schools and rental shops, making it easy for visitors to try their hand at surfing.

Restaurants at Berawa Beach

Finns Beach Club, one of the premier beach clubs in Bali is located at Berawa Beach. Other than this Panama Kitchen and Pool, Bali Bowls and Smoothies and Atlas Beach Club are right next to each other.

Shopping at Berawa Beach

Some really cool boutique stores nearby are IbuBumi Bali, Hanya The Label and Olla Clothing. There are lots of other bamboo furniture stores and boutiques along this street so lots to shop here.

Hotels near Berawa Beach

Morabito Art Villa is a 5 star hotel across the street from Finns Beach Club. Some other nearby villas that are ranked good are Villa Zambala and Villa Luventadur.

Nelayan Beach

Nelayan Beach, also known as Fisherman’s Beach, is a small beach located in the south of Canggu. The beach is popular with both surfers and non-surfers alike, thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and picturesque setting. This is a very quiet beach. I walked her from Batu Bolong beach which was filled with people and there was almost nobody here.

Swimming at Nelayan Beach

The shore break here is a little calmer than the beaches next to it. You can get in and out much easily and less chance of injury. No surf breaks here so you are safe from the beginner surfers with loose boards as well.

Restaurants at Nelayan Beach

There are no cafes or bars on the beach here since only the fishermen come here to park their boats but you can walk up to Berawa Beach and down to Batu Bolong in only 5 minutes.

Hotels near Nelayan Beach

Villa Canggu and Hidden River Cottage are right up the road from this beach. This makes them really serene and quiet villas because the crowd disperses to either Berawa Beach or Batu Bolong.

Pererenan Beach

Pererenan Beach is a peaceful and secluded beach located in the north of Canggu. The beach offers a long stretch of sand and is surrounded by rice paddies and lush greenery, providing a serene and picturesque setting. The waves at Pererenan Beach are suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers.

Surfing at Pererenan Beach

You will find advanced and intermediate surfers here. The waves are strong and not suitable for swimming.

Restaurants at Pererenan Beach

The beach has a very local vibe and you will only find local warungs and small carts with coconuts and snacks. Boheme Canggu is a good restaurant just up the road for some Nasi Goreng. Arte Canggu is an Italian restaurant very popular with the Canggu crowd. Monsieur Spoon is another good option.

Hotels near Pererenan Beach

Casa Ola Villas is a good option close to the beach with a modern vibe and aesthetically pleasing interiors.

Conclusion

Overall, the beaches in Canggu offer something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a vibrant social scene or a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. With their natural beauty and diverse character, it’s no wonder Canggu’s beaches are such a popular attraction for visitors to Bali.
