There are only a few places in the world where you will see a stone arch so perfect. Broken Beach in Nusa Penida is a pretty cove where the water from the ocean flows in from under a gorgeous stone arch. This natural formation has been created over millions of years. This article will provide a complete guide to exploring this unique destination, including how to get there, what to expect, best times to visit, packing tips, FAQs, and nearby places of interest.
What is Broken Beach?
Broken Beach, also known as Pasih Uug, is a stunning cove on the southwest coast of Nusa Penida. The cove was formed due to the collapse of the rock tunnel that connected it to the ocean, creating a natural pool. There is an archway where the cove connects to the ocean that is very beautiful and photographed by everyone. You can find the location of the beach on Google Maps.
Myth behind the beach
There are many myths about this place. Most locals say that there used to be a village on top of the ground where the cove now flows. The villagers wronged a person and lied to them – there are multiple versions of this story – theory either killed the cattle of a little boy or killed the snake of an old man.
To test the villagers, the person they wrong stuck a stick in the ground and asked the villagers to take it out. Only if the villagers did not lie would the stick come out. When the stick did not come out the person knew they had lied. He pulled the stick out and from the whole the ocean rushed in and the whole village collapsed. That is where the cove now is.
How to Get to Nusa Penida
From Sanur Beach Harbor in Bali, a fast boat is available to take you to Nusa Penida. There are two other ports in Bali from where you can take a boat or ferry. The fast boats take 45 minutes and the slower ones take 1 hour to reach the Toka Pakeh harbor in Nusa Penida. There are two other ports in Nusa Penida but they are even further away towards the north east of the island.

Experience at Broken Beach
When you get to the parking for Broken Beach you will have to walk a hundred meters to reach the trail that goes around the cove. The trail goes all around and even over the stone arch way. I walked all the way around the trail and took pictures at various locations.
There is another path from the parking lot that goes from Broken Beach to Angel’s Billabong. I went to Angel’s Billabong first so I hiked over from there to Broken Beach. In between these two spots I located a Manta Ray viewpoint where some people were trying to spot Manta Rays in the ocean below. The place is at the top of the cliff so you can see for miles.
Afterwards you can sit at any of the restaurants that look over the ocean and enjoy a beer or cold drink. I don’t think just going to Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach to look at these places is worth it but if you combine it with trekking down to Diamond Beach and going swimming with Manta Rays then it is a pretty awesome day trip in Nusa Penida.
Things to Carry
There are proper restaurants near there where you can sit and eat lunch or breakfast and lots of shade. You can pretty much bring anything you would on any other day in Bali. Nothing special is required – no sturdy shoes etc. A sunscreen would definitely be a good idea because the trail around the cove doesn’t have much shade.
Is Swimming Allowed at Broken Beach?
No you cannot swim at Broken Beach because there is no way to actually get down from the cliff to the beach.
Is It Worth Visiting Broken Beach in 2023?
