While most people go to visit Bali in Indonesia they miss out on the wonderful island of Lombok right next to it. It’s much more laidback, relaxed and chill than the over touristed areas of Bali. In the south of Lombok is the city of Kuta which has a lot of really cool beaches near it. The beaches are great for relaxing, have white sand as compared to the black sand found in Bali and have great uncrowded surf breaks. In this article, we will explore the top 10 Kuta, Lombok beaches, provide information on the best time to visit, and have some useful tips for your beach adventures.

Kuta is located on the southern coast of Lombok Island Lombok. You can find the exact location of the town on Google Maps

The fastest and most convenient way to reach Lombok is by air. The Lombok International Airport (LOP) is well-connected with major cities in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries. You can find direct flights from Jakarta, Bali, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore.

By Boat from Sumbawa & Bali

If you are already on one of the nearby islands you can opt for a boat journey to Lombok from either Sumbawa or Bali. Sumbawa, located east of Lombok, has ferry services that will take you to Poto Tano, a town in the western part of Lombok. From Bali, you can catch a fast boat or a traditional public ferry to various ports in Lombok.

Ferry From Bali to Lombok

There are two ports in Lombok where you can disembark which are Bangsal and Senggigi. There are four ports in Bali. Only ferries from Serangan, Padang Bai and Sanur go to Senggigi. Ferries from Amed only go to Bangsal, not Senggigi.

The fast ferry takes around 1.5 to 3 hours. The slow boat takes 4 to 8 hours. You can only take your car and scooter across on the slow boat. If you book online there are tour companies that pick you up from your hotel in Bali and drop you off at the ferry for the included price.

10 Best Kuta, Lombok Beaches

Selong Belanak Beach

This is the most picture worthy beach in Bali. It has a long coastline going for miles. The beach is soft and white and the water is light blue and gradually gets deeper. The waves are really gentle and it’s the perfect beach for kids and babies. The waves are super great for longboarders. You might find some buffalos sauntering along the coast as well.

Mawi Beach

Mawi Beach is known for its world-class surfing waves and you will find the more advanced surfers on this beach. It is the most consistent surf break in Lombok so you will always find good waves here even in the dry season. It is a smaller beach at only 150 m and has a reef underneath. Definitely go here if you are looking for powerful waves.

Tanjung Aan Beach

Tanjung Aan Beach has one of the most unique half-moon shapes with hills on both sides of the beach. The sunset from both of these hills looks really beautiful. The beach is a little further away from Kuta so most people don’t go there. The north and south side of the beach are separated by Bukit Merese. There is a really pretty pink shack here with delicious cuisine and sunbeds you can relax on.

Seger Beach

Seger Beach has some really pretty hills all around it for great hikes. The beach has some locals selling coconuts but otherwise remains empty which is great for when you need some peace. You might find some advanced surfers on the waves here but no one else. The beach has really pretty sunsets since it faces the west so there might be a crowd at this time.

Kuta Beach

Kuta Beach, the centerpiece of Kuta Lombok beaches, is a long gorgeous stretch of white sand. It has a shallow reef which looks very pretty in drone shots. The beach is a quick drive from the city which makes it very accessible. The beach has more of a city vibe with lots of shacks, restaurants and beach clubs next to it.

Mawun Beach

This might be one of the best beaches in Kuta, Lombok. The beach has a long crescent shape and is protected from the waves by a channel coming in from the ocean. The beach has coral in some areas and sand bottoms in others. There are lots of sunbeds though you will find that almost all of them are empty and a few warungs selling local cuisine.

Pink Beach

This is the beach that most people are really excited to see. This beach is far from Kuta so it takes some time to get to it but it’s totally worth it. The beach has a light dusty pink color and looks so pretty in pictures. There is a swing and watersports like kayaking at the beach. Gili Petelu and Gili Pasir are close to this beach and it’s a great idea to hire a local fisherman to take you to the island for snorkeling.

Semeti Beach

Semeti Beach is a hidden treasure with views of towering cliffs and awe-inspiring rock formations. This beach will remind you of a Robinson Crusoe beach with pathways between stone croppings and cool nooks and crannies everywhere. It has lots of rock pools at low tide. There is a jungle behind the beach so you are cut off from the world. It’s the most raw beach in Lombok and my favorite.

Areguling Beach

Areguling Beach has a really great shallow fast wave that advanced  surfers will love. The wave is usually empty and you dont have to wait in any lineup. On good days you can get barrels. It’s a great place to see surfers and to make your base if your primary focus is surfing. There are a couple bungalows close to here where you can stay.

Gerupuk Beach

Gerupuk Beach is another really great surf break. It is more chill than Areguling Beach. Since it’s easier there is more crowd here than other Lombok beaches. There are a few surf schools near here that run camps. It’s a great place for beginners to learn surfing since most of the people here are beginners and you can make mistakes.

Best Time to Visit

To make the most of your beach experience in Kuta Lombok, it is recommended to visit between the months of May and September when the weather is dry and sunny. During this period, the sea is calm, creating ideal conditions for swimming, snorkeling, and various water activities. Avoid the rainy season from November to April, as the heavy rains and rough seas bring lots of trash and sometimes you can’t get in the water.

Things to Carry

  • Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the tropical sun. Make sure its reef safe sunscreen. It’s not going to be fun to snorkel if all the coral are bleached.
  • Hat and sunglasses: Shield yourself from the intense heat.
  • Beach towel: Lounge comfortably on the sand.
  • Swimwear: Dive in for a swim.
  • Snorkeling gear: Explore the underwater world. There are shops on some beaches that rent these.
  • Water and snacks: Stay hydrated and energized. Most beaches have warungs where you can buy snacks and drinks so it’s not that important.
  • Camera: Capture the breathtaking moments. A GoPro and drone will also serve you well.
