Rice Terraces

The Tegalalang Rice Fields and Ceking Rice Fields are UNESCO World Heritage sites near Ubud in Bali. The people of these villages still use ancient techniques to cultivate rice in the region. They cut the land and use step farming to grow rice.

When the rice is ready for harvest the entire region turns green and the steps are very pretty to film from the air with drone shots. People from all over the world come here to film the rice fields during this time.

There are also swings at the rice fields situated high in the hills. You can experience swinging over a deep valley with the rice fields spreading all around you. There are other opportunities for pictures as well such as the Love Bali sign and bamboo baskets to name a few.

Tis Cafe is a beautiful place to have lunch and relax in a pool that overlooks the rice fields in Tegalalang. Its right next to the fields and you can use their pool if you order something to eat.

Monkey Forest Ubud

The Monkey Forest, also known as the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, is a famous tourist destination in Ubud. One of the most unique things to do in Bali, you won’t find a forest like this anywhere else.

It is a blooming rainforest that is home to numerous populations of Balinese long-tailed monkeys known as macaques. You’ll see the monkeys in their natural habitat, watch them play, groom each other and look for food.

The Monkey Forest isn’t just a place to see monkeys. It is also a sacred place for the locals and a place of spiritual and cultural importance. There are three ancient temples in the forest: Pura Dalem (Temple of the Dead), Pura Beji (Temple of Purification) and Pura Prajapati (Temple of Cremation). Local communities continue to make active use of these temples for religious ceremonies and rituals.

Waterfalls

The area around Ubud is known for having more waterfalls than you can count. A top thing to do in Bali is to swim in the pools under these waterfalls. You can spend days here and still not be able to see them all. From thundering waterfalls to gentle cascades there are waterfalls for everyone to enjoy in Bali. Below are just three of the numerous waterfalls that this area is blessed with.

Sekumpul Waterfall

This waterfall, which lies in the village of Sekumpul just to the north of Bali, is famous for its stunning beauty. It’s made up of a network of multiple waterfalls that flow in the thick rainforest. There are viewpoints from the top to take pictures of the waterfall and you can also descend down into the valley to see them from the bottom.

Sumampan Waterfall

Sumampan Waterfall is a hidden beauty that has not yet become famous. You have to descend some 200 steps to get to the waterfall, but the effort is worth it. The waterfall is across a river so you have to hold onto a rope to get across. It is a very adventurous hike. You can swim in the river and the waterfall under the pool. There are also rock carvings in the stones around the river and the cliff wall while descending to the valley floor.

Banyumala Twin Waterfalls

Banyumala Twin Waterfalls are located in the highlands region of Bali. This is a unique waterfall that consists of two side-by-side waterfalls. The waterfalls are surrounded by thick tropical forests, which give it an atmosphere of peace. There is a beautiful pool at the bottom that you can swim in. It is a great place to spend the day.

Gembleng Waterfall

This is my favorite waterfall in Bali because of the beautiful infinity pool that it has. It’s located in Sidemen so its a 1.5 hour journey from Ubud and no one ever comes here. The pool at the waterfall overlooks the forest and its like a little jacuzzi you can sit in and relax.

Temples

With its rich tradition of culture, Bali is often called ‘The Island of the Thousand Temples.’ These temples are an important part of Bali Hinduism which is scattered throughout the island. Temples you should definitely visit are listed below.

Pura Tanah Lot

Pura Tanah Lot Temple is one of the most beautiful and famous temples in Bali. The Hindu temple is located on a rock formation in the ocean off the coast of Seminyak. The temple is inaccessible during high tide when the path to the temple gets filled with ocean water. The temple was built to honor the ocean god here.

Goa Gajah

The name of this temple translates to Elephant Cave after the stone carving of the elephant above the cave entrance. The cave was carved out of the mountain in the 11th century. A pool and fountains were also discovered in the forest next to it. The cave is said to have been made for those people that wish to be in a peaceful environment and meditate in the forest.

Gunung Kawi

These impressive stone carvings were carved out of the stone in the mountain. They are said to be the funerary monuments for King Anak Wungsu, his wife, sons and his favorite concubines. The carvings are some of the most ancient carvings that have survived in the region. They are beautiful examples of how Balinese people used to honor their kings.

Pura Tirta Empul

A Hindu Balinese water temple that people still go to to perform water purification ceremonies. It is known as one of the most sacred sites on the island. For a fee you can ask the priests to perform the water ceremony for you as well and take a dip in the sacred pool. The temple is beautiful and there is a pond full of koi fish that you can feed.

Pura Goa Lawah

Located on Bali’s southeast coast, Pura Goa Lawah is a one-of-a-kind temple. It is also known as “Bat Cave Temple”. It is thought to be home to hundreds of bats and has importance in Balinese mythology.

Pura Besakih

It is the largest, most important temple complex in Bali and has a large number of Balinese gates throughout its compound. Each gate represents different levels of spiritual significance, which serve as a transition from the outer to the inner sanctuaries. It is the Mother Temple of the island and one of the most important pillars of Hinduism on the island.

Quad & Dirt Biking

Quad and dirt biking is sure to get the adrenaline junkie in us excited. It’s an exhilarating activity and one of the best things to do in Bali for those seeking adventure and excitement.

Various tour packages are available for dirt bike riding in Bali, catering to different skill levels. Whether you’re a beginner, an intermediate rider, or an experienced off-road enthusiast, there’s something for everyone. These tours can be booked through various websites and have a range of exciting routes and trails to explore.

For beginners, there are guided tours with teachers that will teach you how to ride a bike and all the safety features you must know. Intermediate and advanced riders can take on more challenging terrains like dirt biking on the beach or on the slopes of a volcano.

They have lots of different packages like cruising along the coastline, venturing into the forests, or going on top of volcanos. The thrill and adrenaline rush of dirt bike riding in Bali is unforgettable.

Black Sand Beaches

Bali is known for its black sand beach around the main island. These beaches are black because of the volcanic activity under the island. It is really cool to walk on a black sand beach if you haven’t seen one before. Here are a few of black sand beaches worth exploring.

Batu Bolong Beach

Known for its world class waves that surfers go to everyday, Batu Bolong Beach in Canggu is the most popular beach in Bali. The waves at Batu Bolong Beach are pumping everyday and everyone from beginners taking surf lessons to pro surfers love to come here. The Old Man’s Bar on the beach is a great place to have a beer after surfing and enjoy the sun as it sets behind the ocean.

Lovina Beach

Lovina Beach, located on Bali’s northern coast is known for its black volcanic sand. Unlike the more crowded tourist spots, Lovina Beach is more quiet and you can unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings. It is particularly famous for its sunrise boat tours, where you can see dolphins frolicking in the sea.

Amed Beach

Amed Beach, another black sand beach, is a popular destination for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Its underwater world is teeming with vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life, making it an ideal spot for underwater exploration. The USAT Liberty, a sunken WW2 ship, is one of the most famous diving sites in Bali.

These are just a couple of examples of the many black sand beaches scattered throughout Bali. Once you arrive on the island, it won’t be hard to find beaches with breathtaking views and opportunities for diving and surfing.

La Brisa Sunday Market

La Brisa is one of the coolest beach clubs and best things to do in Bali. They have a pool and a great menu with lots of cocktails you can enjoy throughout the day. The most influential people in Bali love to come here in the morning for brunch so you might run into a famous Instagrammer!

La Brisa also hosts a great Sunday Market. It supports local farmers and businesses. The market takes place every Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. It is a great mix of local culture, art, music and delicious food. There is a range of products like jewelry, clothing, home décor, and various other accessories.

Food lovers will also have the opportunity to enjoy some interesting cuisine with live music performances around the market. Several food stands and vehicles have a wide variety of dishes, from traditional local food to exotic dishes like samosas from India!

Potato Head Beach Club

If you are one of those people that prefer more night clubs activities to be included in the things to do in Bali then Potato Head is the beach club to be at every weekend. The club has stunning architecture which was designed by Andra Matin of Indonesia. The building is shaped like a sphere, made out of ancient Indonesian teak window frames which are collected from all over Indonesia.

Potato Head has an impressive lineup of international DJs and live performers who take the stage every weekend. The carefully curated music collections are divided into many different styles, such as house, techno, hip hop, and more. If you go here during the weekend, you will find crowds dancing and swaying to the rhythm of the music.

At Potato Head, you’ll find a wide variety of food options. The bar serves specially prepared cocktails which are accompanied by carefully curated dishes. From fresh seafood and grilled meats to vegetarian and vegan options, there’s something to satisfy everyone.

Canggu Restaurants

Canggu is a bustling hub where people from all over the world come to live. This has culminated in a vibrant cuisine culture in the town. Some of the best restaurants in the world are actually in this tiny town in Bali. The below three are my top choices from all the cafes in Canggu.

Santanera

Santanera is a beautifully designed luxurious restaurant overlooking the rice fields in Canggu. The restaurant has dishes such as a Chocolate Mousse Oblea Wafer, Hokkaido Scallops, and Foie gras parfait with sauternes jelly. Their cuisine focuses on interesting flavors to nudge you towards expanding your palate. One of the best experiences in town!

Miss Fish

The freshest ingredients are used to create the signature dishes at this exclusive restaurant. For lovers of sushi this restaurant is a godsend. Their chefs are skilled in the art of hand rolling sushi and creating exquisite dishes. You are going to have the best sushi of your life here.

LowCal Cheatery

Serving meals for all types of diets like vegan, paleo, keto and low calorie, this is by far one of the best restaurants in Canggu. One of their most popular dishes are their chicken breast with lemon sauce and a salad that is to die for. They have live music every night you can enjoy while having dinner.

Luxury Spas

Getting pampered at a luxury spa is undoubtedly one of the top things to do in Bali. The island’s famous spas combine ancient Balinese traditions with modern wellness practices. Bali’s spa retreats provide not just cosmetic treatments, but a holistic approach to well-being, encompassing mind, body, and spirit.

COMO Shambhala

COMO Shambhala retreat in Ubud is known for its holistic approach to health and well-being. It has a range of services, including massages, yoga, and authentic treatments that promote balance and harmony.

The Spa at Hanging Gardens Bali

The Spa at Hanging Gardens Bali in the rainforest of Ubud, has a serene environment you will love. Inspired by Balinese traditions, their treatments, such as massages, wraps, and aromatherapy experiences, allow you to immerse yourself in the island’s health practices.

Sundari and Jammu Spa

Sundari and Jammu Spa follow the ancient Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which is to maintain a harmonious balance between spirit and environment. Through healing and wellness practices, you get a complete treatment that resets your body and aligns with the principles of this philosophy.

Make sure to carve out time for a Balinese spa treatment. The spa treatments are much cheaper here than any other place but have the same good quality.

Surfing

There are tons of breaks all around the coast of Bali that have amazing waves year round. The surf season is during the dry season from May to October but I have seen good waves almost every week during the week.

Beaches in Uluwatu like Suluban Beach have huge waves while the beaches a little bit up the coast near Canggu like Batu Bolong have chill waves that beginners can learn on.

You can rent a board at Batu Bolong Beach for IDR 50,000 for 2 hours or you can take a lesson for IDR 300,000. There are also lots of shops around town for all the surf supplies you need.

Beach Clubs

La Brisa

A gorgeous bohemian beach club in Canggu which you will find full of people during the day because of how good their food and service is. They are on the beachfront in Batu Bolong beach right next to the best waves you could surf.

The Lawn

This is a more intimate beach club on Canggu beach next to the waves the long boarders prefer. They have really nice open seating facing the ocean and a beautiful pool. Their menu is delicious and its the favorite place for locals to come to for brunch.

Finns

This is a huge beach clubs with lots of activities for adults and children. They have tennis courts, indoor playgrounds and a huge pool. You can spend an entire day here and not get bored. The kids can float on one of their floaties in the pool while the parents enjoy some cocktails.

Sundays Beach Club

This is the most beautiful beach club in Bali in my opinion. The sand here is white and powdery soft and the view of the cliffs in Uluwatu makes everything look very dramatic. They have sunset bonfires, live music and movies by the beach which are so cool.

Ulu Cliffhouse

This is a beautiful beach club perched on a cliff in Uluwatu. The cliffs overlooks the ocean and has pan panoramic views of the entire coastline. They have the best parties in Uluwatu at night. Their DJs are fresh and the music is always really cool.

Stay in a Private Villa

Canggu has some of the best affordable villas in the world. VillaRa and Villa Mahalo are two that I have stayed at and loved. The villas start at around $2000 per month and you get a pool, a kitchen and your own private room.

This is one of the best things I love about Bali because it gives me a great and beautiful place to live in where I can concentrate and work. You can get Gojek and Grab delivery from any restaurant to your villa. There are at home masseuse that give the best massage and the pools are the best to lay in the sun.

Melasti Beach

There are a crazy amount of sandy beaches of Uluwatu but Melasti Beach is the prettiest of them all. Melasti Beach in Uluwatu is a hidden gem with powdery white sand and the most gorgeous blue water. Situated under the cliffs in Uluwatu, it is a tranquil escape from the other crowded beaches of Uluwatu. It’s a great addition to your list of things to do in Bali.

One of the notable features of Melasti Beach is its crystal-clear water, which is perfect for swimming and water activities. Unlike some other beaches in Bali, Melasti Beach is well-maintained, with no litter or garbage scattered around probably because there are some really chic beach clubs right on the shore.

Getting to Melasti Beach is an adventure in itself. The road leading to the beach is filled with narrow lanes and sharp curves. You will find great views of the sheer cliffs of Uluwatu on your way.

Once you arrive at Melasti Beach, you’ll find yourself surrounded by one of the most beautiful places on earth. Whether you choose to bask in the sun, take a stroll along the shoreline, or simply unwind and enjoy the peace, Melasti Beach is a great place to get away from the crowds.

Uluwatu Temple and Dance

Perched at the edge of the Uluwatu cliffs is the Uluwatu Temple with an impressive collection of statues, architecture and monkeys. The temple is one of the finest examples of Balinese architecture. Hindu pilgrims from all around Bali come here to pay their respects.

In the evening the temple hosts Kecak Dance performances in the open arena facing the ocean. This is a traditional dance done to connect with the divine. It is a dance you will not get to see anywhere else in the world but Bali.

Mount Agung Hike

A trip to Mount Agung in Bali, takes you to the top of the world’s largest and deadliest volcano. The hike involves large steep stones, narrow passages and deep slopes which makes it even more adventurous and thrilling.

You can do a short hike for 3-4 hours or a long hike that will take you to the summit. The summit hike can take up to 7 hours, gaining 2150 meters of elevation from the ground. That is 7000 feet we are talking about!

This hike is not for faint-hearted people, it requires a lot of muscular strength, and agility to reach to the top. But once you reach the top, it will be worth the effort. The top of the mountain has a clear view of the sunrise above the clouds. It feels like you are above the clouds!

Mount Batur Natural Hot Spring

Mount Batur’s natural hot springs are one of the top things to do in Bali. The site is known for its geothermal hot springs that are therapeutic and relaxing. This place has several natural pools filled with mineral-rich thermal water that is naturally heated due to the volcanic activity of Mount Batur.

The mineral rich water is great for your skin and allows your muscles to heal from all the stress. The springs are between the mountain where the water comes down from and Lake Batur. This means the place is surrounded by natural beauty.

Nusa Penida Day Trip

The island of Nusa Penida takes 1 hour to reach by ferry from the south coast of Bali. Nusa Penida has some of the most famous sites in Bali including Kelingking Viewpoint, Diamond Beach, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong and the most famous – Manta Point.

For snorkeling with these Manta Rays you will need to book a Manta Ray snorkeling tour beforehand. Nusa Penida has an abundance of beautiful Manta Rays that stay in the region year round. They are curious creatures and love to come close and inspect humans in the water.

You can do a day trip to Nusa Penida by taking a fast boat in the morning and coming back in the evening. All the attractions are situated on the west of the island so they are easy to do together.

Exploring Sidemen

Sidemen is a beautiful town like Ubud that not many people go to. This makes it one of the last truly authentic Balinese areas in Bali. You will see the local people still living in traditional huts and making ancients crafts in the Tenganan Village near Sidemen.

At Kusamba Beach you will find sea salt farmers that carry sea water in bamboo baskets and then sprinkle them on the hot rocks at the beach to get sand.

Gembleng Waterfall and rafting on Telaga Waja River also happens near here. Sidemen is a beautiful place is Bali that should not be missed. You will find so many hidden gems here that you will surprised.

Diving in Tulamben

The dive site in Tulamben has the shipwreck of a WWII ship that ran aground here. You can see an abundance of marine life in this area from barracudas, turtles, reef sharks, eels and seahorses. Parts of the shipwreck re just 5 meters deep so snorkeling is also a great activity to do here. There are other dive sites right next to the shipwreck like an anemone forest and a drop off.

Conclusion

Whether you seek adventure, relaxation, or want to visit museums, Bali has it all. From thrilling water parks and adventurous hikes to beaches and hot springs, the island has a wide range of activities to choose from.

You can engage with the island’s rich cultural heritage by visiting temples and participating in traditional rituals. The vibrant nightlife scene is also great here, with beach bars and clubs that have lively entertainment. Take time to explore local markets and boutique stores to find unique souvenirs and fashionable items.

Bali also has challenging hikes and thrilling water sports. Mount Agung sunrise hike has breathtaking sunrise views, while water activities like surfing and scuba are great in all the beaches.

Bali is a great adventure with lots of places to visit and things to do. This guide will help you find the best locations for any type of adventure you prefer.
