Rice Fields in Sidemen, Bali
Sidemen has a lot of rice fields spread out all around the town. You can take great drone photography of these fields and even go for walks in them. You can hike the fields by yourself or take a guide from the village to take you on interesting routes through the fields. The rice fields in Tegalalang have become very crowded but you will only find the locals in the rice fields here.
Local Market in Sidemen, Bali
Sidemen’s local market is a beautiful example of local culture and heritage that has been preserved through time. You can sample local delicacies, fresh produce, and handicrafts here. Be sure to get here early because the market is already wrapping up by 9am. Close by small towns like Amlapur also have really beautiful local markets, each with their own speciality.
Tenganan Village
Tenganan Village is a traditional village in Sidemen that has a unique insight into Bali’s ancient culture and traditions. It is one of the few remaining Bali Aga villages, known for preserving their unique customs. You can wander through the village’s narrow streets, admire traditional architecture, and learn about the rich heritage of the Bali Aga people. Each house in the village has their door open for you to come in, buy their wares and talk to them. They are most famous for wooden masks, bamboo items but their geringsing cloth is the best anywhere. The cloth is painstakingly made with months of work and cost anywhere up to 25 million rupiah.
Salt Farming in Kusamba Beach
Kusamba Beach is a very unique beach where the local people harvest sea salt from the ocean. They do this by fetching water from the ocean and sprinkling it patiently on the hot rocks on the beach. When the water dries the salt is left behind which they harvest. The salt is known as Balinese palung salt. They then take the dried salt and further process it in their homes to make sal flowers. These are the last generation of sea salt farmers and a dying art that needs to be supported and revived so make sure to visit them.
Weaving Workshops
Pelangi, Songket and Endek weaving are types of traditional weaving in Sidemen that still have a lot of practitioners. Weavers in Sidemen work on their hand looms to create complex patterns in their cloth. There are a lot of weaving workshops in the town with weavers specializing in different types of weaving. You can watch them work and purchase clothes from them. The weavers are hard working people and need encouragement to continue teaching this art to their children and I am very passionate about promoting them.
Silver Making Workshops
Sidemen is famous for its silver workshops, where skilled artisans create exquisite jewelry and decorative items. The Silver Sidemen or Agung Silver Workshop give you a chance to make silver jewelry for yourself. They will guide you through the whole process of melting down silver, beating it into the perfect shape and then letting it cool.
Gembleng Waterfall
Gembleng Waterfall is one of my favorite waterfalls in Bali because it forms two infinity pools overlooking the jungle. The natural pools are full of clear fresh water and you can sit in one and look across the landscape. It is very surprising that more people haven’t found this waterfall yet because compared to some of the other waterfalls this one is a gem.
Jagasatru Waterfall
Jagasatru Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall with a big pool in the middle of Sidemen. It is a very secluded waterfall and almost no one goes there because people don’t really know about this waterfall yet. It’s a much better waterfall than the crowded ones near Ubud.
Tukad Cepung Waterfall
Tukad Cepung Waterfall is famous for its unique cave setting. To reach this natural wonder, you have to walk through a narrow canyon and climb down some stairs. Once you get near the cave you see the waterfall falling inside it. It is a very unique waterfall but due to its uniqueness there are a lot of people that come to see it. The ideal time to visit Tukad Cepung Waterfall is early in the morning, as it has the perfect lighting conditions for capturing stunning photographs of the sunlight filtering through the cave.
Telaga Waja River Rafting
Thrill-seekers can go for an exhilarating river rafting adventure on the Telaga Waja River. It is a fantastic way to enjoy the natural beauty of Sidemen while experiencing an adrenaline rush.
The Telaga Waja River is known for its white water rapids that are not dangerous, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced rafters. The entire rafting course is 17 km and takes around 3 hours to complete. The tour company will pick you up from your hotel, do the entire tour and drop you back. They also have ATV tours through waterfalls and river tubing tours.
Taman Ujung Water Palace
Taman Ujung Water Palace is a stunning cultural heritage site that once used to be the home of the Balinese royalty. It is located in the eastern part of Sidemen. The palace was constructed with stone with lots of water features on the grounds. The focal point of this place is the floating palace at the center of the complex. There are also two pools filled with koi fish. You can step on the stones and go to the middle of the pool for a great photo. You are allowed to eat inside the compound and there are lots of small places to sit and eat so take a packed lunch with you. The palace is open from 7am to 7pm and the entrance fee is IDR 75,000.
Tirta Gangga Water Temple
Tirta Gangga Water Temple is a sacred Hindu temple known for its tranquil ponds and ornate sculptures. It is only 30 minutes away from Taman Ujung Palace. The temple was built to honor Goddess Ganga who is an important figure in Hindu mythology. There are lots of pools here, some for the koi fish and others that you can swim in for IDR 10,000. There are lots of monuments and stone structures that showcase Balinese art. The entrance fee is IDR 50,000 for adults.
Mount Agung Viewpoints
Bukit Cinta
One of the most popular viewpoints to admire the majestic Mount Agung is Bukit Cinta. It is a stop on the road in the east part of Sidemen. There is no structure here, it’s just a stop on the road but the views from this point are amazing.
Lahangan Sweet is a lesser-known viewpoint that has a hidden gem for photographers and nature enthusiasts. You have to hike to the top of the ridge from where you can see Mount Agung on one side and the ocean on the other side. There are lots of structures made for photos and also a camping site here.
Pura Lempuyang
Pura Lempuyang, also known as Lempuyang Temple, is one of the holiest and most sacred temples in Bali. It is on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang and has breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. You can climb the iconic split gates, known as the “Gates of Heaven,” and capture stunning photographs with Mount Agung in the backdrop.

3 Day Itinerary for Sidemen, Bali
Day 1
Go for rafting on the Tegala Waja River, enjoying the adrenaline rush and breathtaking scenery. Then make your way to Gembleng Waterfall to relax in the infinity pools. After lunch make your way to Kusamba Beach to relax and watch the local sea salt farmers. In the evening you can visit Blue Lagoon Beach for dinner and some snorkeling before heading back to Sidemen.
Day 2
Begin your day with a visit to Tirta Gangga Water Temple and then to Taman Ujung Water Palace. All the Mount Agung viewpoints are also close by so you can decide which ones you would like to visit. In the afternoon make your way to Tenganan Village and explore the beautiful culture and heritage of the Balinese people.
Day 3
Wake up early to get to the local village before 9am and have a breakfast of fresh fruit. Then go on a relaxing walk in the rice fields in town. Once you are back you can choose between a cooking class and a silver jewelry making class. In the evening visit ancient weaving workshops of Sidemen and then relax with a massage until dinner.
