Have you ever dreamt about going into a magical cave with a magnificent waterfall falling down from its ceiling? You will be surprised to know that such a waterfall exists in Bali and I have visited it!

Unlike most waterfalls that cascade down from the top of a cliff, Tukad Cepung is a secret waterfall hidden inside a cave. It is only visible once you brave the hike and enter the cave to look up. The waterfall flows through a narrow gap in the rocks, creating a mesmerizing beam of light that illuminates the cave walls and the water below. 💧 🌳

To reach the waterfall, you have to first trek down a steep staircase and cross a small stream. The trail is pretty easy but sometimes during the rainy season the water levels rise and the rocks become slippery.

Once you reach the waterfall, you can swim in the beautiful blue pool below or just sit and have a picnic near it. The waterfall is straight out of Ghibli movie and not a sight you will soon forget!

Where is Tukad Cepung Waterfalls?

Tukad Cepung is in the north east of Ubud. It takes around 50 minutes to get here by scooter. You can find the exact location on Google Maps.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Tukad Cepung Waterfall is during the dry season, which runs from May to September in Bali. During this time, the weather is sunny and the water is at a lower level. This makes the waterfall both safer and much more fun to explore.

Another good reason to visit during dry season is the photo opportunities. The sunlight filters the cave and illuminates the waterfall from the top more prominently during this time of the year. This makes for some incredible photo opportunities.

That being said, Tukad Cepung Waterfall can be visited year-round. During the rainy season (October to April), the water levels can be much higher, making it more difficult to navigate the trail and swim in the natural pool. I went during the rainy season and the water seemed ok to me so I don’t you should skip it even if you go during this time.

Entry Fee and Timings

The entry fee for Tukad Cepung Waterfall is IDR 15,000 per person for adults as of January 2023. The fee may be slightly different now, so it’s best to bring some cash and be prepared to pay a small fee upon arrival.

The waterfall is typically open from around 8am to 5pm every day, but it’s always a good idea to check the hours of operation beforehand, as they may vary depending on the season or weather conditions.

How to Get to Tukad Cepung Waterfall

Scooter

Renting a scooter is a popular and cheap way to explore Bali. You can rent a scooter for a day, which typically costs around IDR 60,000 – IDR 80,000. I usually found that if you rented for a longer time the price tended to be lower.

Local taxi

Private taxis are widely available in Bali, and you can easily hire one to take you to Tukad Cepung Waterfall but you really don’t need it because it’s so close. You should instead use Gojek or Grab. These are Ubers in Indonesia. You can choose to ride on a scooter behind the driver. I am sure the drivers accept rides on scooters from Ubud to Tukad Cepung Waterfall.

Rent a car and driver

Renting a car can be a comfortable and convenient option, especially if you’re traveling with a group. You can rent a car for around IDR 800,000 – IDR 1,200,000 (approximately USD 55 – USD 85) for a full day. This will include drop off and pick up for your car at your hotel and they include the cost for the drivers.

Experience at Tukad Cepung Waterfall

The hiking trail to Tukad Cepung Waterfall was challenging because I hate cardio, but it can be a rewarding experience for those who enjoy hiking. Here’s a brief overview of the trail:

The trail begins with a steep staircase leading down to the river. The staircase has around 200 steps, so it got tiring at the end. The steps are made of concrete and have handrails, but I still hated climbing down it.

After descending the staircase, you’ll need to cross a small river to reach the other side. The water level can vary depending on the season but there wasn’t much water when I went.

Once you cross the river, the trail becomes rocky and uneven. The rocks are slippery, especially during the rainy season.

The trail ends at the entrance of the cave where the waterfall is located. To reach the waterfall, you’ll need to wade through ankle-deep water in the cave. The water is cold and the rocks are slippery, so please be careful while crossing.

Things to Carry

  • Insect repellent: A must when going out in Bali anywhere.
  • Towel: If you plan on swimming or getting wet in the waterfall definitely bring a towel to dry off.
  • Water shoes: I always wear water shoes in water bodies where I cant see the bottom.
