Are you looking for a beach that’s off the beaten path? A place where you can surf, swim, and soak up the sun without the crowds? Look no further than Suluban Beach, Bali’s hidden gem. Suluban Beach is a tiny beach in Bali, tucked away under the cliffs of Uluwatu. The beach is a rugged and rocky beach that requires a bit of effort to access, but once you get there, you’ll feel like you’ve discovered a secret paradise.

Before reading this article I feel like I should let you know that I was massively disappointed with this beach at high tide when the beach becomes really small. I had seen so many pictures and heard so much about this beach that I expected it to be really pretty – which I could see that it was in years past but now it is just crowded and dirty and not worth the climb at all. If you do end up going make sure you go at sunrise and get out by 9am.

Where is Suluban Beach?

Suluban Beach is on the west coast of Uluwatu. Its near Uluwatu Temple and closer to Canggu than other beaches. You can find the exact location on Google Maps.

How to Get to Suluban Beach

By Scooter

Renting a scooter is a popular way to get around Bali. It’s also much cheaper than any other alternative. Scooter rentals can be found throughout Bali and they cost around IDR 60,000 to IDR 80,000 (approximately USD 3.50 to USD 5.50) per day. I’ve found that longer term rentals are usually cheaper. Checkout my guide to renting a scooter in Bali so you don’t get scammed like I did.

Local taxi

For those who prefer a hassle-free journey, local taxis like Gojek or Grab are readily available in Bali. These are Ubers for Bali. You can ask for a scooter or car depending on what you prefer. Hop into one of these comfortable rides and let the driver navigate the roads while you sit back and enjoy the scenic views along the way.

Private car charter

If you prefer a more luxurious and convenient option, renting a car with a private driver is a fantastic choice. This is a great choice for people who are traveling in bigger groups. Prices for a full day rental range from IDR 800,000 to IDR 1,200,000 (approximately USD 55 – USD 85).

Directions to Suluban Beach

  1. From Ngurah Rai International Airport, head south towards Jimbaran Bay. The drive should take about 20 minutes.
  2. Once you reach Jimbaran Bay, continue south along Jalan Uluwatu. This road will take you all the way to Suluban Beach.
  3. As you get closer to Suluban Beach, keep an eye out for signs for Blue Point Beach. Suluban Beach is located just below Blue Point Beach.
  4. When you reach the entrance to Blue Point Beach, park your vehicle and follow the signs for Suluban Beach. You’ll need to navigate down a set of steep stairs and narrow alleys to reach the beach.

Entry Fee and Timings

The good news is that Suluban Beach is free to enter. The beach is only accessible during low tide, which means you’ll need to plan your visit accordingly. The best time to visit Suluban Beach is during the early morning or late afternoon when the tide is low. During high tide the beach becomes really small and there is no place to sit.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Uluwatu is during the dry season from April to October. The beaches and water are clean at this time because there is no washed up trash. The days are also sunny for beach times.

Swimming at Suluban Beach

At high tide you cannot swim at the beach because the waves smash against the cliff rocks. At low tide there is a sand beach outside the cliffs that you can swim at. And while swimming is allowed, keep an eye on the tide as it can change quickly and make it difficult to access the beach.

Surfing at Suluban Beach

Suluban Beach is the entry and exit point for the waves at Uluwatu Cliff. Surfing at Suluban Beach is only for experienced surfers that can handle big waves. It has consistent waves that end on the cliffs so it is very dangerous for beginners. The waves are also really powerful and the beach only works with bigger swells.

Water Sports at Suluban Beach

Surfing is the main attraction at Suluban Beach. The waves can reach up to 12 feet high, and they’re consistent throughout the year. I did not see anyone else doing any other water sports at this beach and neither are there any vendors to rent any equipment.

Amenities at Suluban Beach

Suluban Beach is not your typical beach with umbrellas and lounge chairs. Instead, it’s a rugged and rocky beach that requires a bit of effort to access. However, there are a few warungs (small shops) selling snacks and drinks a 10 minute walk up the cliff.

Nearby Restaurants and Shops

If you’re feeling hungry after a day at Suluban beach, head to one of the cafes nearby. There are plenty of restaurants that have Indonesian as well as Western cuisine. If you’re in the mood for some shopping, check out the Uluwatu Market for some souvenirs and local handicrafts.

Things to Carry

  • Sunscreen – The sun in Bali can be brutal, so make sure to pack a high SPF sunscreen.
  • Swimsuit – A given, but make sure to pack a swimsuit that’s comfortable and stays put. There are some swimwear shops in the parking lot too.
  • Hat and Sunglasses – Protect yourself from the sun and look stylish at the same time.
  • Towel – Bring a towel to dry off after a dip in the ocean.
  • Dry Bag – Keep your electronics safe from the sand and water with a dry bag.
