Finally, I emerged from the trees to find myself standing before the breathtaking Banyumala Waterfalls. With two cascading falls and crystal clear water, it was like something out of a dream. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe as I stood there, taking in the natural beauty around me. If you’re a nature lover or simply seeking a tranquil escape in Bali, Banyumala Twin Waterfalls are a must-visit.
Why Are Banyumala Waterfalls Also Called The Twin Waterfalls?
Banyumala Waterfalls are also known as the Twin Waterfalls because they consist of two separate cascading falls, side by side. The water flows down from the top of the cliff, splitting into two streams as it falls. The two falls are almost identical in size and shape, which is why they are referred to as twins.
The falls are separated by a small rock outcropping, which creates a unique feature that sets Banyumala Twin Waterfalls apart from other waterfalls in Bali. You can find the exact location on Google Maps.
How to Get to Banyumala Waterfalls
By Scooter:
Renting a scooter is a popular way to get around Bali. It’s also much cheaper than any other alternative. Scooter rentals can be found throughout Bali and typically cost around IDR 60,000 to IDR 80,000 (approximately USD 3.50 to USD 5.50) per day. I’ve found that longer term rentals are usually cheaper.
Local taxi
For those who prefer a hassle-free journey, local taxis like Gojek or Grab are readily available in Bali. These are Ubers for Bali. You can ask for a scooter or car depending on what you prefer. Hop into one of these comfortable rides and let the driver navigate the roads while you sit back and enjoy the scenic views along the way.
Private car charter
If you prefer a more luxurious and convenient option, renting a car with a private driver is a fantastic choice. This is a great choice for people who are traveling in bigger groups. Prices for a full day rental range from IDR 800,000 to IDR 1,200,000 (approximately USD 55 – USD 85).
Directions to Banyumala Waterfalls
- Head north from Ubud towards Bedugul, either via Jl. Raya Singapadu or Jl. Raya Andong.
- Continue on Jl. Raya Bedugul until you reach the village of Wanagiri.
- Look for a sign that says “Banyumala Waterfall” and turn left onto the small road. This road is unpaved, narrow and steep, so drive carefully.
- Follow the road for approximately 1.5 kilometers until you reach the parking area for Banyumala Twin Waterfalls.
- Park your vehicle and pay the entrance fee at the ticket booth.
- From the parking area, follow the signs and walk down the stairs to the waterfall. The hike down to the waterfall takes approximately 15-20 minutes and can be a bit steep and slippery.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Banyumala Waterfalls is during the dry season from May to September. During this time, the weather is sunny and perfect for exploration. The water levels of the waterfall are also lower, making it easier and safer to swim in the pool below. Visiting during the dry season also means that the hiking trails leading to the waterfall are less muddy and easier to navigate.

Banyumala Twin Waterfalls in Bali are open from 7am to 6pm daily. The entrance fees is IDR 30,000 and the parking fees is IDR 2000.

Trek through the jungle
As I stepped off my scooter and made my way to the start of the trail, I couldn’t help but feel excited for the hike to Banyumala Waterfalls. The trail was narrow and steep, but the promise of the beautiful waterfalls at the end of it was all the motivation I needed.
I could hear the sound of the waterfall from a long distance away. Bali jungles like always were showing off with green blooming trees everywhere. The hike down was a bit challenging, with some parts being steep and slippery, but not as bad as some of the other waterfalls I have encountered in my life.
Finding the waterfall
The trail opened up to reveal the stunning Banyumala Twin Waterfalls, with its two cascading falls and gleaming blue pool below. I couldn’t help but feel in awe of the natural beauty around me. It looked like it was plucked straight out of a Ghibli movie.
Picnic and coming back
I had my picnic lunch there – thank god for good sandwiches. I stayed there for about 1 hour and took a dip in the pool. Then I waited to get dry and hiked back up. The hike was definitely a bit challenging, but it was well worth it for the stunning views and refreshing dip in the waterfall.
Things to Carry
- Water: I always carry water with me when visiting any place in Bali, since it’s very easy to get dehydrated during hiking and while swimming.
- Sunscreen: The sun can be intense in Bali, even in the shade of the trees, so I always bring sunscreen to protect my skin.
- Insect repellent: Bali jungles are full of mosquitoes, so it’s a good idea to bring insect repellent to avoid bites.
- Towel: A towel is essential for drying off after swimming and for keeping belongings dry while hiking. Plus the rocks are sharp so it’ll be a soft thing to sit on.
- Water shoes: The rocks and pool bottom can be slippery plus sharp, so I always wear water shoes to prevent slipping and protect my feet.
- Snacks: It’s a good idea to bring some snacks, such as energy bars or fruit, to keep energy levels up during the hike and to enjoy a picnic by the waterfall. Maybe some sandwiches?
- Camera: Banyumala Waterfalls are a wonder of nature, so I carried my camera to capture the views.
- Waterproof bag: A waterproof bag can protect electronics and other belongings from getting wet while swimming. I have a Quechua bag which works very well.
- Cash: The entrance fee to Banyumala Waterfall is cash only, so I brought some local currency in cash.
Can You Swim at Banyumala Waterfalls?
Yes, you are able to swim at Banyumala Twin Waterfalls in Bali. The pool at the base of the waterfall is deep enough for swimming. I always wear water shoes at any waterfalls because you never know what’s at the bottom.
Are the Banyumala Waterfalls Appropriate for Small Kids?
Banyumala Waterfalls may not be appropriate for small children, especially those who are very small. The hike down to the waterfall is quite steep and slippery. There are bamboo ladders in some places and I wouldn’t want the little ones to get hurt.
That being said, older children who are experienced hikers and swimmers may be able to enjoy the waterfalls.

Things To Do Near Banyumala Waterfalls
Located just a few kilometers from Banyumala Waterfall, these two lakes are a beautiful sight to see. You can rent a canoe or paddleboat and explore the serene lakes or take a hike around the perimeter for stunning views.
Wanagiri Hidden Hills
This Instagram-worthy destination is just a few minutes’ drive from Banyumala Waterfall. It offers picturesque viewpoints overlooking the mountains and the lakes! There are also several activities like swings, photo props, and bird nests to take beautiful photos.
Go for a Coffee Tasting
This was one of my favorite activities to do near Ubud. It’s something so unique to Bali culture I had never seen it anywhere else before. The plantations use the famous “Kopi Luwak” made from coffee beans that have been eaten and excreted by a civet. The civet poop is then used to make coffee. I tried it and it actually tasted pretty good.
Ulun Danu Beratan Temple
This beautiful temple is located on the shores of Lake Beratan. It is about an hour’s drive from Banyumala Waterfall. The temple has beautiful Balinese architecture and is much quieter than other temples. You can really soak in the peaceful vibes.
Lovina Beach is located on the northern coast of Bali. It is just a short drive from Banyumala Waterfall. The beach is known for its black sand and calm waters, making it a great place for swimming and sunbathing. You can also go on a dolphin watching tour or enjoy some of the local seafood restaurants along the shore.
Waterfalls Near Banyumala Twin Waterfalls
This series of cascading waterfalls can be found in the northern region of Bali. The falls are famous for their seven cascades and require a challenging hike.
This waterfall is situated in the central region of Bali and is known for its height of over 40 meters. You can take a refreshing swim in the pool at the base of the falls and enjoy the picturesque surrounding rainforest.
