Suwehan Beach is a beautiful raw beach on the southeast corner of Nusa Penida. Most people who visit Nusa Penida go to the west end of the island with all the famous attractions and miss out on this gorgeous beach. The beach has stunning views of the surrounding cliffs and there is a very photogenic rock sticking out of the water.

The beach used to be completely wild a few years ago and at one point after the Nusa Penida earthquake there was no way to get down to the beach from the top of the cliff. After the earthquake the locals rebuilt the stairs and now there are proper concrete steps to get down to the beach. Due to this the traffic has increased a little bit so you might encounter some other people. Yet the beach remains one of the last wild beaches in Bali where if you get lucky you might get the whole beach to yourself.

Where is Suwehan Beach?

Suwehan Beach is in the southeast corner of Nusa Penida. The beach is below the cliffs so you have to park your scooter at the top and then make your way to the bottom. You can find the exact location of the parking lot in Google Maps.

How to Get to Nusa Penida

From Sanur Beach Harbor in Bali, a fast boat is available to take you to Nusa Penida. There are two other ports in Bali from where you can take a boat or ferry. The fast boats take 45 minutes and the slower ones take 1 hour to reach the Toka Pakeh harbor in Nusa Penida. There are two other ports in Nusa Penida but they are even further away towards the north east of the island.

Be sure to wear a helmet, and make sure your scooter is in good condition before you hit the road.

Renting a car can be a comfortable and convenient option, especially if you’re traveling with a group. You can rent a car for around IDR 800,000 – IDR 1,200,000 (approximately USD 55 – USD 85) for a full day. This will include pick up and drop off at your accommodation.

To get to Suwehan Beach you will have to go through the interior of the island. The main interior road has just been repaved so the entire journey is very smooth except maybe the last kilometer which might get a little bumpy. The entire journey from Toya Pakeh harbor to the beach takes around 1 hour if you don’t encounter any traffic. It’s faster on a scooter and a little slower if you are in a car.

Best Time to Visit Suwehan Beach

The best time to visit Suwehan Beach is during the dry season, which is from May to September. During this time, the weather is sunny and the sea is calm, haveing perfect conditions for beach activities and swimming. Since the beach faces the west, you have to come here in the morning for the sun otherwise you will be in the shadow of the cliffs and not enjoy the beach as much. Also make sure to go here during low tide because the beach is completely covered by the ocean during high tide!

There is no entry fee to visit Suwehan Beach. It is open to the public throughout the year. It is important to note that Suwehan Beach is a remote and undiscovered destination, which means that there are no specific timings for visiting. Experience at Suwehan Beach

When I got to the entrance at the top I found a patch of dirt where I parked my scooter. There is no entrance fee yet but that might change in the future as the beach becomes more popular. After parking the scooter, I walked over to the viewpoint near the warung from where I could look down at the beach and see the beach. You should do this before heading down to make sure its low tide and the beach is not completely underwater. The viewpoint is also the perfect place to fly the drone from.

After I had got some good drone shots I started to descend down the stairs. It took about 20 minutes for me to reach the bottom and I wasn’t rushing. At the bottom the stairs lead to the beach and you can see the cliffs rising up behind you. There is a huge rock in front of the beach which is very photogenic. If you fly your drone here or any part of Nusa Penida you will find lots of marine life near the beach. I saw Manta Rays and people have reported spotting turtles, mola molas and other marine life.

The way back up is grueling and you will definitely need a lot of water after you reach the top. Luckily the warung has some good drinks so you can replenish there. If you come back up during lunch time you can have lunch with a view here. Atuh beach is also close to here so you might want to do both the beaches in the same trip.
